Announcement: Memo on the Central Italy Earthquake (August 24, 2016)

The University of Georgia’s International Residential Center in Cortona (Arezzo), located approximately 100 miles Northwest of the reported epicenter of the recent earthquake in Central Italy, was not affected by the incident.  All structures and buildings in Cortona have been reported stable and secure.
 
At approximately 3:30 AM (local time), Wednesday the 24th of August, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake took place in central Italy, causing damage and casualties in areas along the borders between the regions of Umbria, Marche, and Lazio.  The Italian earthquake institute (INGV) has reported many aftershocks following the first quake, the strongest at 5.5.  The initial earthquake was said to have been felt as far away as Rome.
